However, I saw a new face today. Initially, I thought she is a newcomer to the session and she is just there to join us. Later, it turned out that she is an International chess master! Same as GM Bong, she comes from Philipines. After 2.5 hrs of chess coaching, Christine (the new face that I mentioned earlier)proceed to have a few causal ganes with us. Both CW and SK lost to her. SK blundered away her queen by playing RC7,because Bg5 would cause black to lose her queenie. In CW's game, Christine played a typical Ruy Lopez and exerted her 'spanish torture' on her poor victim. I don't think CW played to the best of his capability because he did miss a few moves which thus caused him to end up with a very difficult position. In the end, Christine made use of her superior technique to achieve a beautiful win with Bxg6, forcing mate a few moves later. Perhaps, both of them were intimidated by her title???
After they had completed their games, I proceeded to challenge her. I always have an undescribable defiance towards titled players. I am not intimated by strong players at all. Instead I feel excited when I play strong opponents esp titled players because I have a very strong will and determination of beating them. A strong fighting spirit. However, there is a flip side to this. I lose my interest very quickly when I know that the player sitting opposite me is 'supposed' weaker. Very often I achieved better results aginst stronger opponets than against weaker ones. Perhaps I was too over-confident, or maybe I just could not bother with him or her??? Christine fell for an opening trap, causing her to lose a piece for a pawn. The opening was Sicilian Grand prix Attack and I was having black. During the game, she tried to create tactics and counterplay, but I managed to stop them all. After that she set a trap for me. She thought that if I were to play Bc6, she could reply Bxe6. However, I have seen further than that. As it turned out, I was the one setting the trap for her.I tempted her to play Bxe6, which she did. I replied Bxe4. A few moves later, both her queen and bishop on e6 were simulataneously attacked and I managed to grab one more piece. After the game she said she didn't anticipate Bxe4. I guess fatigue for her must have set in and I was just lucky enough to capitalize on that. Despite having 2 physical pieces up, my kingside was tied up and I could not bring my extra forces into play. In other words, I was effectively playing with 'equal' material. The rest of the game was mainly tactics. ( I have always been very confident of my tactical power. I know that my tactical skill is no less inferior than titled players, at least that's what I firmly believe in) Both her center pawns actually reached d7 and e7 and my king was on f7! However, I managed to calculate 7 moves ahead(everything is forced, thus making my calculation a lot easier)and knew that the game would be winning for me. I played Qxg2, sacrificing a rook. It prevented her from checking me with a gain of tempo. Actually I would not really considered it as a sacrifice, because I knew that I could regain the material back, Mind you, my pawns were on a2 and b2, vs hers on e7 and e7. A wild game, I must say. Finally I managed to checkmate her in 48 moves. Upon reaching home, I immediately recorded the entire game based on my memory. Perhaps, I can show you the entire game the next time we meet. I was very pleased with my performance. Nevertheless, I know that I must not be complacent. I still have a very long way to go.. I have to work harder if I were to achieve my aims.. Today's victory serves a tremendous confidence booster for me. It gives me a firm belief in my capcability, that I can achieve my aims after all...
Friday the 20th

Yesterday was the last Friday chess session of this semester. Time really flies I supposed. As a result, most of us stayed longer than usual. As per usual, my team-mates and I went for our sports session from 6-7.15pm. Yesterday's sports was basketball. After that we made our way back to MPSH4 for our training session. The session starts at 7.30pm. I must admit that basketball is a very strenuous sport. I was so tired that I could hardly pushed the woods, not to mention play the game.I left at 11.45pm, thinking that I would be able to catch the last train in Jurong East station in the nick of time. Unfortunately, I was wrong. I don't know what happened yesterday but the bus came much later than usual. There are 5-6 buses that I could take to get to Jurong East interchange. It is not as though I have only 1 single pathetic bus to take. Naturally, my probability of reaching back home is increased dramatically. However, this was not the case. Within a 'long' span of 15-20 mins, I only saw 1 bus-198 and that was the bus I took.
It was close, but not close enough. I was about to enter that gate, but the gate shut itself. I supposed the system was set in such a way that the gate will automatically shut itself once the last train has left the platform. As a result, I felt like the modern Robinson Crusoe, stranded on the island called Jurong East. Furthermore, there was no more bus available. I had to contemplate my next move. I have 3 options... 1) Sleep in Jurong East station 2)Take cab home 3) Go back to NUS. I chose the 3rd option. I decided to walk back... Hahaha.. But I lost my way in the end. Left with no choice, I took a cab back to NUS. I called my team mates asking where they were, because they always go for supper after normal training session. They were at West Coast Park. I took a cab to West Coast McDonald and it cost me $8 and that was all I had. Had our supper there and WS treated me to a 'sumptious' McDonald feast. After that, we went to 'play' in the West Coast Park.I didn't know my teammates are so childish. Hahaha... Esp my team manager, WS. We made our way back to NUS campus ard 3.30am. I supposed we need to have a 'good' rest because the following morning we have chess coachings by a GM in Newton. 'Good' rest, huh? Ya, right. Hahha, courtesy of our team manager.... hahaha
This morning we had chess coaching by a GM. A very amiable person, very conversational with his language which is good because he can relate his ideas to us better. After that, we went for lunch in Orchard. Left for home ard 2pm...

Irritating lab partner

As you know, I am a chemistry major student and that means I have to attend lab sessions and do lab reports. For CM 2142, I have a lab partner and her name is XXX. She is a boisterous and irritating lab partner. Whenever I speak softly to her, she will recipocate with her loud voice and such gesture always attract unwanted attention. And you know what's the worse part? We are supposed to do the experiment together. If she does anything incorrect, I must signal to her the error, right? Very often, she conducts the experiment in the wrong fashion and I am always there to correct her. Unfortunately, she doesn't appreciate it. Hello... I am not doing this for you. I don't care about you. You are not pretty and you are rude and boisterous. Do you think I would like to waste my breath and time and saliva on you? The answer is a resounding 'NO'! I am doing this for myself. If you do it wrongly, we would get the wrong data. Consequently, we would (or rather, I would) be dragged down by you! When I pinpointed her error, she would talk back in a loud and rude manner. A gal, somemore....
A typical extract from our conversation..
Me: XXX, I think you did this part wrongly.
xxx: What....! You don't understand the experiment, is it?
Me: ( After that, I would explain to her why it is wrong )
XXX: No la. Your explanation is all wrong!
Ok. So I let her continue the experiment. Her retribution (ours rather, because we had to stay a little later due to her inability) came when she did the experiment wrongly. She tried to rush things. We were supposed to take the readings only after the sample's temperature reached 70 degrees. But she chose to take the easy way out. She took the readings at 50 degree. She wanted to do things fast! And we, I mean she, screwed up the experiment. The rest finished the experiement 1.5 hrs before us. We were the last to leave the lab... Felt like giving her a tight slap. I had her contact on my msn and I BLOCKED her. What a rude gal. I always feel very stressed when I go for this lab session. I always get 'scolded' by her. If she were a guy I would have retaliated. Unfortunately, she isn't. I felt like a wimp. Letting a gal scold me and not doing anything. She was the one doing all the wrong thing and I get all the scoldings (from her, mind you). I really don't get it... I expect girls to behave in a elegant fashion. Elegant is too strong a word. I mean, people of the opposite sex should at least behave in a civilized manner. Nv mind. I would only work with her for one more lab session. She really 'pissed' me off. Feel like giving her a tight slap. Oops. Not A tight slap. Multiple tight slaps.
And you know what happened next? I let her do the experiment all by herself since she is so 'smart' And she screwed it up. She did the experiment twice and it all went wrong. But I kept mum, to avoid another scolding. Hahah.. Finally she relented. She went to approach the staff for help. I told the staff there was no need for her to step in. I would carry on from there. And so I did. I did the experiment 'perfectly' .At least I got the desired data. So, what was it that she did wrong? Remember what I said earlier in this entry? She took the readings at 50 degree. That's where she went wrong. See? She is also an impatient girl. err.. Too rude to be a girl. But based on her anatomy, she is a girl. What an asshole. The worst part is, she told the bal assistant that I didn't help her with the experiment and that was why she did the experiement wrongly! What a liar! XXX, you sucks, gal!
Usually I won't say such thing on a girl. Up to date, I have nv done such a thing. And it's thanks to you that my 'record' is broken, you asshole!

The journey continues..

This weekend marks the beginning of the mid-term break. Suddenly realized that time really flies. As the captain of the team, very often, I have to make tough choices. I don't like this player particularly because he is extremely childish. Guess what? He is aged 24 years old. 2 years ago, he was the captain of the team. However, this guy is damn arrogant and immature. In last year's GACC he created a lot of trouble in the foreign country. Indirectly, he affected the team' s morale. Last year, I was only a freshmen. As a newcomer to the team , I feel that I don't have the right to comment on the team issue. Previously, I have heard a lot of romours about him. And all of them are bad ones. Initially I didnt believe in them. But this immature creep proves them right. Due to the sensitivity of the issues, I will not elaborate too much on it. Yet, one thing is clear. This guy is a total asshole. I respect him as a player but not as a person. He doesn't have the basic chess etiquette-doesn't keep his pieces when the game is over, always look down on weaker players, always get impatient in explaining the concepts and principles to the juniors etc. Now comes the best part- he bit the hand that fed him. I am sure my team mates know what I mean. And I am not the only one having this sentiment. My club members have revealed to me how they felt about him as well. I have always emphasized team bonding, unity and spirit. Last Friday, I went out with my team mates for supper after our training sessions. I want to make use of such opportunity to know my team mates better. We had a great time together. All of a sudden, the juniors don't feel so distanced from the seniors anymore and I feel that this is a great sign. I like chess a lot and I would my team mates to share my sentiments as well... Of course, the results are important and we should always take our sessions seriously. What I am trying to say is that, result is not everything. I would rather choose weak players who care about the team interests than to select those strong players who are self sentered and conceited.
Maybe everything is pre-destined... I am very glad that I have WS, Esmond, MH, Dolphin, SK by my side when I need them the most. A friend in need is a friend indeed..

An unlucky week

Last Friday, I lost my ezlink card. As per usual, I was making my way back home after my chess session. The card was with me upon my exit from Admiralty station. I guessed I was in a daze then. 10 minutes later, I sensed something amiss. I can't find my card. I then walked back along the same path that I had just taken in an effort to find back my lost card, but to no avail. In a short span of 10 minutes, the card was lost for good. I went to the control station staff and told them my problem. The staff told me what to do and with that I made my 'long' walk home with a heavy heart. Of course I need to make a replacement card which would cost me $21. Since the lost card is a concession card, I can still claim back whatever amount that is left. And I can only do so 1 week after I made my 'report'. Thus for the time being I would have to use the adult ezlink card and it's not cheap. Haiz.. Blame on my bad luck.
Not only that, last week while I was on my way to school, I witnessed a horrible incident. I saw a guy being beaten by 2 masked guys, both armed with metal rod. And the beating was done in board daylight. In order for me to get to the station, I have to walk past them! In order to protect my own safety, I hid in the nearby carpark and hope that the beating would end soon. The beating lasted around 2 minutes before their allies came in a pick-up. The masked men then rushed to the pick-up and escaped. Several people were around when the incident happened. It took place around 8am. The shops were already opened. Fortunately, the injured guy was able to pick himself up and called the police (because he was using his handphone). However, that incident left a very deep impression on me. Consequently my mood was affected. A horrendous incident to witness. His entire body was covered with blood.
A few days later (same time) I saw a garung guni man peeing! He was peeing into the drain, I cannot believe my eyes, because he was doing his business in such an open and casual manner. I don't consider myself a superstitious person but to witness these incidents in a short span of 1 week, something must be wrong. Maybe that's the reason why I have been down on luck recently.
We are going to have a AUG trial conducted between players from different universities in Singapore. I wanted to play in it, however I chose not to. I have decided to give up my position to the seniors because they are going to graduate soon and this could well be their very last chance. In a way, I sacrificed myself for their benefit. I can always take part in the next event. I still have 2-3 more years in NUS, so I don't think it's a big problem for me. However, the year 1s were not very pleased to hear about this. Yesterday evening, I made an announcement and told them my view on this issue. I want to promote transparency. After that I wanted every player to voice their comment. All of them agreed that we should scrap away with the trials and give the positions to the seniors. I was very pleased to hear that. Note that, I don't consider myself a senior. And such decision doesn't benefit me, although I was the one who made this decision. Only year 3 students onward benefit from such decision. My mind and heart are at conflict. I want to play. At the same time, as the team captain, I have to make decisions that are difficult. It was a tough one to make but if I have the chance to turn back time, I will stick to my original decision. The seniors have done a lot for the team and it's high time that we show some respect and pay tributes to them. My good friend thought that such decision is only unfair to me because I am skillful enough to play in AUG. Yet I chose to give up my place. I must admit, it was a very, very difficult decision to make. Ironically, I am making a decision that doesn't benefit me. But I feel that we have to look at the big picture. MH just SMS me. She said that although I have 'lost' my place in AUG, I gained respect from my peers and thus enhanced my reputation in the club. Thank you, MH. Really appreciate it. WS said the same thing too after the end of the session. Thank you, WS. Thank you, Es who has been there for me all this while.

Email to my teammates

Hi. As the new captain of the team, I have a few words to say.
To Omar. You didnt let the team down. You have been out of touch with chess for quite some time, so we cant really expect too much from you. Furthermore, we played in the national division when we were actually expecting ourselves to play in the 1st division. Omar, it is a regret that you will not be playing for us anymore. Time flies. I really miss the good old days at GACC. I sincerely hope that you will be able to play for us in GACC one last time. Same goes for Daowei. I would like to see the same old team going to KL one more time. At least bade farewell to Suiching in person... GACC is one of the best moments in my life and I would like to thank Daowei, Wengsoon, Tianyi, Minh Hien and especially you, Omar for making that particular week a special one for me. Despite saying this, I will respect your decision and hereby wish you all the best in your future undertakings. Thank you, Omar.
To Wengsoon. I need to apologize to you especially, for my poor performance in NIC 2006/2007. I promised to deliver the points but I failed to live up to it. Thank you Wengsson for speaking up for me. No doubt my opponents were strong. But that doesnt give me a valid excuse for losing game 3 and 4 against Christer Aplin and Moses Soh when I had a tremendous positional advantage in both games. This was testified by FM Goh Weiming who actually pulled me to one side and analyzed the games for me after the end of round 4. That was a gentleman behaviour from Weiming, considering that we are from different teams. So Omar, you are not alone. You are not right to say that anyone from the first team will be able to convert the winning advantage you obtained in your games to a win. I know I wont be able to. I also need to apologize to Daowei for my cowardly play in game 1 against Timothy Wee. Although I obtained a draw in that game, it was a play that I am very ashamed of because it was a wimpy display by me.
To Daowei. Thank you so much for helping me with my opening preparation. Notably your inspiring words when we spoke on msn on Saturday night. Daowei is right. It is far better to lose a game due to sheer bravery than to lose a game through cowardice. His words inspired me to play better the next day abeit losing game 4. I did an exchange sacrifice and soon obtained a promising position which I failed to convert. I am proud of my play on Sunday, at least the bravery and fighting spirit were there.
To Esmond. Thank you so much for your advice and encouragement. Dont worry, my team mates. I will move on from here. However, there is something that I dont agree with him. I lost the games not through fatigue but due to poor positional understanding. Surprisingly I wasnt tired at all. I guess the holiday jobs did help me build up my stamina and endurance after all. In games 3 and 4, I just could not find a suitable plan. Apparently, my play is full of flaws and weaknesses. Although I am tactically sharp, my poor positional play proved to be my downfall. I would have to brush up on my play if I still want to lead the team to national glory. Under normal circumstances, I would have gotten away with it but not in the national division. I agree with Daowei on this point. The games played in national division were not quality ones. Rather, the games were mostly decided by tension.
Last but not least, I would like to congratulate NUS 2's achievement in this year's NIC 2006/2007 2nd division category. I would like to remind the team members one more important thing. Although chess is very much an individualized game/sport, we must not forget that we are still playing as a team. We have no ace/star player, but plenty of team players. NUS 2's victory belongs to the entire club and not just any particular individual. Defeat or victory belongs to the entire team. This last statement is the message that I would like to convey to you, my friends and team mates.

Part 1. Ready? Action!

Several interesting incidents have taken place since I last updated my blog. Approximately 1 month ago. Let me start off with incidents that occurred last month. In the previous entry, I mentioned that I was taking 2 jobs per day- as a paper distributor from 0645-0845 at Yew Tee MRT station and a drink promoter in Jurong East Giant IMM from 12-9/2-9 (it depends). I completed my former assignment in 280706 and the latter on 310706.
Every routine in july:
0530: Reveille
Breakfast and wash-up: 0535-0615
Leave the house: 0620
Reached Yew Tee: 0640-0645
I had to be there early because the papers would arrive by 0645 sharp. If I do not turn up punctually, the timing for other stations will be affected as well. (Yew Tee is their first stop) I got this job through Recruitexpress and the hourly rate is $5.50 per hr. I would be given 2hrs pay even if I finished before 0845 which I always done. Timing: 0645-0845.
While working as a paper distributor, I did encounter several rude people. And those impudent characters are office personnel. I assumed they are, from the types of clothes they wear. Nevertheless, such kind of people is in the minority. I hated rainy days. Whenever it rains, I would have to bring the papers to the sheltered areas. Fortunately, the old folks are very kind and helpful, always offering me a helping hand, thus making my task a lot easier. In addition, a very kind soul aged 76 this year was always there to assist me with paper distributing and I am very grateful for that and he doesn’t stand to gain anything. His friendly and kind gesture convinced me that in this world kind and helpful souls do exist. Usually I would finish distributing 1000 papers in a mere 30 minutes ie. 0715-0745. I can’t distribute those papers until 0715. By 0710, however, there would be a long queue waiting to collect their free Mandarin papers from me. Once I finished, I would made my way back home and have a short nap before I proceed for my next assignment.

The working venue was at Jurong East Giant IMM. It is a hypermarket. I worked as a drink promoter for ‘Nutri-Tea’ with 2 ladies over there- Manling and Wanteng. However, after 1 week, Manling was posted to another branch. Initially there were 3 people manning the booth. Now there were only 2. However, from hearsay, 1 more person was expected to come over. I was hoping for a girl and Wanteng was hoping for a guy. Hahah. In the end, my prayers were answered. Joanna arrived and she is very pretty and petite. She reminded me of another girl, Weilin, who almost became my girlfriend. If only I wasn’t so hesitant then… The 3 of us got along very well. And the phrase ‘very well’ is an understatement though. We were virtually flirting with one another… And both of them are still single. They are greenhorns in relationships by the way. While we were working there, we did encounter some unpleasant experiences. As promoters, our job was to offer the public free drink samples. However, some cheapskates took advantage of such offer to quench their thirst and gulped cups after cups. We feedback this to our supervisors and were taught the methods of handling them. And that was not all. We encounter a ‘ji go bei’! It means pervert in English. I gave that guy a very stern warning; I told him we welcomed him to try the free samples. But, if he was there to create trouble I would be the one entertaining him. I guessed my words and gestures intimidated him. Since then, he didn’t dare to create trouble. Now, let’s get back to more mood-lightening issues. The girl named Joanna is quite pretty. During our tenure, 2 guys actually approached her to get her contact number. Maybe the number is 1 and not 2. Because the other guy didn’t dare to approach her personally and instead asked his buddy to bail him out. What a coward! The second guy was more direct (I am not referring to the buddy, mind you). Although 2 different approaches were adopted, the end result was the same. A resounding, 1-0. Our last working day was on 310706. Meanwhile, we were not the only promoters there. Behind our booth, we have the ‘CISCO’ promoters. Their promotion only lasted for 1 week. However, for the first few days, I didn’t spot any potential prey. Everything changed on the penultimate day, 300606… I spotted 2 pretty girls! But, I wasn’t offered any opportunity on that fateful day. I guessed Cupid must have taken an off-day on that day. As I mentioned earlier, I worked until 9pm everyday. Finally, Cupid awoke in the nick of time. At 8pm, a golden opportunity presented itself. The 2 girls walked past my booth and I offered them a drink. They accepted my offer. From that point onward, we flirted with one another. At 9pm sharp, I approached the girls and asked for their contacts. One of them was willing while the other was reluctant.
Extract from that conversation Part 1:
Me: Hey, I want your contact!
She: Ohh. So you want my contact, is it?
Me: Yes, I want them.
She wrote down her hand phone number.
She: Any more things you want?
Me: I want your msn and email, everything?
She wrote them down. I had a look at the paper.
Me: So your name is Xue’er.
She: Ya. What’s yours?
Me: David.
She: Give me a missed call.
Me: I will call you tonight.
Well, the rest is history. We chatted on msn on that same night. I tried to obtain the contact number of the other girl but she said that as long as I have Xue’er’s, I would be able to contact her. Ok, I am fine with that.
After that I went to change my pass at the security post. After that, I made my way back to the booth. Near our booth, there is a small shop that sells female accessories eg. Ear rings, blouses etc. The lady boss is quite pretty too. Since I have already secured a 1-0 victory in the previous encounter, my morale was extremely high. I approached this lady boss. From her looks, I guessed she is no more than 25 years old.
Extract from that conversation Part 2:
Me: Hey, I want your contact!
I guessed she was shocked at my directness, because she asked me to repeat my previous question. I reiterated it. She shook her head. But I wasn’t to be denied.
Me: Ok. But I want your email and msn.
She wrote them down.
Me: What’s your name?
She 2: Connie.
Although it wasn’t a 1-0 victory, it was a good try and I managed to secure a draw. Hahaha… Guess how old she is??? 18 years old! I can’t believe it myself too. On that fateful day, I managed to secure 2 pretty girls’ numbers, not to mention Wanteng and Joanna’s. I was a happy man on that day.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chesswizard.blogspot.com/2006/08/part-1-ready-action.html' title='Part 1. Last Friday, I received a job offer from an employment agency-work as a facilitator in a 'Harry Potter' camp.. The venue is Montfort Junior School. On Saturday, we worked from 8-12. Busy preparing the setting and equipment. Got to meet 3 new friends- Sebastian, Stacey and Mei Yun. The real test started on Monday and Tuesday. On the first day, we were involved with P5 kids. Some of them are very rebellious. On the next day, we were responsible for P3 kids. The P3 kids are more disciplined. Although I was extremely tired, I enjoyed myself alot. It is a form of training for me because I would like to be a teacher when I graduate from NUS.
On both days-Monday and Tuesday, we worked until 2.30pm. Subsequently we went for lunch together. I enjoyed myself a lot these 2.5 days. The days are short but meaningful. My close friends should know that I am a sentimental guy, and I will miss them-the kids and the new friends I met a lot. Thank you, folks, for the wonderful time....

Reunion with the good guys again...

The exams are finally over. Went out with my good buddies today. I was late for the KTV session, as usual. Actually I am always late for every event. Hahahah... Why? When I reached the MRT station, I then realized that I had forgotten to bring my Ez-link card. As a result I had to go back home to get it. Wasted some time because of this...
Sang KTV until 2.30PM. Could have sung longer until the staff member started to chase us out. Hahah... Our time slot actually ended at 2PM. But who cares? It is a 'ritual' or routine for us to leave only after repeated 'chasing'. Hahah.. Great one, GK. Left some drink in your cup to leave the impression that we have not finished our meal. Hahah...
After that, we went to Sim Lim Square because I wanted to buy an MP3 Player. After we made a few rounds (scouting for information) , I finally decided on the MP3 player that I wanted. Sony brand, 6GB, $275. Great buy, I should say. We then proceeded to foood court in the building. Treated my buddies wth chicken rice. Extra rice some more. Need to thank them for accompanying me to Sim Lim Square and giving me valuable advice, thus allowing me to make an informed choice. Thanks, guys. Ya. Almost forgot. We went to Sim Lim Square (right?) via GK's lorry. He tried to 'tekan' us by breaking suddenly. 3 of us were seated at the back. Had a great chat with my 2 buddies on the topic ' soccer'. Hahah..
While we were having our meal, we saw our former secondary school classmate, M. A gal, by the way.She came for meal with her boyfriend. And guess what? Her boyfriend is a Malay. Not that I am against such relationship. I have no such right, it is just that such cases are a little uncommon. Very voluptuous. More so than before. (Background music: howling of a big, bad wolf)
We then proceeded to do some window -shopping/went to Kinokuniya... That was the final activity of the day. But, I guess we will meet up quite often these few days before we search for jobs together.

Did a quiz just now. Have not updated the blog for more than a month....
A lot of things have happened recently. An unfortunate and unpleasant incident knocked on my door recently, but I will not update this matter on the blog. Because I would like to forget about it asap. Hahah...
One more paper for me... I took 5 modules this semester and so far I have already sat for 4 papers. My last paper will be on 4 May. For my chem paper, I was given 2 hrs to complete it, and guess what? I took only 1.5 hrs to finish it. I am quite confident that I will do well in this paper. Furthermore, I completed my econs paper in 1 hr 15 min. This left me with another 45 mins to check my workings... Totally unbelievable! The last time such thing happened was in year 2000- the year that I sat for my 'O' Level. In a similar fashion, I finished my 'A' Maths paper in 1.5 hrs and I spent the last 1 hr checking. In the end, I got an A for that particular subject. I did quite well then. I had L1R5=7.
I am quite confident that I will do well this semester. I guess I am on form now. Really hope I will do well this semester and this form will continue until my last paper on 4 May. This semester is very important to me.....

What a nuisance..

I cant believe it. Every week we are supposed to submit a group assignment. There are 8 people in our group. However, only 2 of us do our work faithfully. Myself and M. This is pathetic. Is it because the rest of the group members do not know their work and thus cannot tackle the questions or are they just too busy? Busy? I myself am extremely busy too. Imagine writing those stupid chemistry lab reports every week. Damn tedious, man. Worse still, all of us get the same grade. So far, out of 6 assignments we had 4 'A's and 2'B's. Sounds good, right? NO! How I wish the assignments are graded on individual basis. Like I mentioned earlier, I always do my work faithfully. Not only do I have to post my answers on IVLE, I also wrote them down on paper. During tutorial sessions, I would check my answers against the tutor's and my answers are always right. Pardon my bluntness. I am a bit frustrated rght now. I could not say so better myself. There is no doubt in my mind that I would have gotten all 'A' s in my assignments if done individually.
Those girls make me sick. We have 6 gals and 2 guys in our group. Don't think I am a lucky man, dude. No matter how attractive they may be, the first thing that disgusts me is laziness. Their attitudes make me puke. Again, please pardon me for my language. So far, I realised the girls that I have encountered so far lack 'moral values'. In the recent chemistry test, I saw quite a few girls cheated. I am not saying that guys do not cheat. But on that day itself, around my area, I saw many girls cheating. Disgusting. Where are your integrity? Are those marks really that important to you? After these few incidents, I realised that I would not find my dream girl in a billion years. I am not picky, mind you. To me, looks do not matter that much. I would be lying if I say I do not like pretty girls. But one has to realise that looks will fade with increasing years. What matters most is their heart. Currently, I have lost quite a bit of confidence in girls.. Mind you, those girls that cheated are actually quite pretty. Pretty, but what a pity. Hey! To those bunch of girls who cheated, your attitude sucks!

NUS vs NTU chess challenge...

Have not updated my blog for a few weeks, I supposed... I am feeling quite low now. I played 4 games today, lost the 1st and the 2nd game and drew the rest. That means I only had 1/4 and that is pathetic. In fact the score does not reflect my true strength. I had a winning position against their incoming chess president, and I screwed the position up. In the 2nd game, I lost to a weak opponent. My position was so overwhelming that any move I made would lead me to victory. However, I wanted to go for a quick kill and played g5. This move led to a weakening of my King's position. I guessed I underestimated my opponent... Another defeat... In the 3rd game, I played against their outgoing chess president. Against my usual 1.e4, he played the rock solid French setup. Despite this, I managed to crack his defense in a mere 12 moves. According to the chess program Fritz 8, the position was a +- for me. In other words, I had a huge advantage after just 12 moves. Somehow, I managed to let him escape. Arrghh! In the 4th game I played against their ace player and achieved a draw. He played e4 against my pet defense-Sicilian Najdorf. He adopted a very sharp line against my defense. Despite this, I was able to equalize quite comfortably in the opening stage., until he deviated from the theory with Qf2! After that I plunged into deep thought because I have been playing this line for many years and this was the first time that I encountered this weird but strong move. In the middle game he had quite a huge advantage but I was able to hold on. The tide was reversed after the queen exchange. According to Fritz, I missed a winning combination! Very disappointed. I guessed I was too tired today... Otherwise I should be able to see such tactical combination easily... Very upset. A demoralizing setback for me...
I must give credit to my opponents. With due respect, they played well against me. And I gained valuable chess experience from them. Thank you, CA, SH, KY and KS.

Does this mean I am heading in the correct direction???

The IFG chess championship 2006 was held from 16-17 Feb in MPSH4. There were 20 people playing in this championship and I was the hot favourite to win this tournament. Unfortunately, only 2 out of 6 GACC players played in this competition. The other 4 were not able to make it. As a result, I thought that this should be an easy win for me. How wrong I was. WS, the other GACC player (as well as our preseident), lost in the very first round to an 'engine' player. His defeat was a wake up call for me because I felt that if I continued to take things easy, I might suffer the same fate.
In round 2, I met Esmond. He is my friend and was also the former AJC captain. Judging from strength, he should not be a match for me. However, he is fully capable of creating upsets. I took white and played my usual 1. e4. Before the start of this tournament, I had openly revealed my opening repertoire. I guessed I was very confident and did not think that I could possibly drop any point. After all, I only lost 1 game in a world class tournament such as the World Varsity Championship last year and I had my 7 games unbeaten run. This tournament should be 'chicken-feed' for me. However, I had my first scare in Rd 2. Esmond adopted an unorthodox variation of the Black side of Ruy Lopez. This variation was a pet line of the former world chess champion Emanuel Lasker and it is known for its solidity. After the game, Esmond revealed that he was fearful of my aggressive attack and thus adopted this setup to contain my attack. In this game, I achieved totally nothing in the opening stage and had to rely on my technique to win. I was very frustrated that I could not crack his defence. Really frustrated...
In Rd 3 , I played another 'engine' player. Could not believe it. Because he actually had the guts to attack me! He sacrificed 2 pawns to lure my pieces from the defence of the king. However, I had already calculated all this before I took those pawns. At the end of the countless variations, I judged that the attack could be repelled and the transposition into the endgame would spell defeat for him. In the endgame, he tried to transpose into an opposite bishop endgame which is famous for its drawish tendency. The other players then gathered around our table and were surprised that I was actually willing to enter this supposed drawn endgame. I then revealed my secret move- Bc1! The moment I made this move, my opponent was dumbfounded. He had missed this move. He was not the only one. The audience had also missed this cunning move. Indeed, after the game I was very proud of myself that I was able to see this. Without this move, this game would be a dead draw. By the end of first day, CW and I were leading the pack with 3 wins each. That meant that we would definitely face each other in the 4th Rd.
I arrived early the next day to prepare myself mentally for the start of Rd 4. I guessed that he might have prepared something for me. And I was right. At the end of the opening stage, I was not able to obtain any significant advantage. Again, this frustrated me a lot. Later in the middle game, he sacrificed a pawn in an attempt to open up my position. Well, it would not be nice of me to decline his invitation, right? I took his pawn immediately. In the end, strangely, I was the one who actually benefited from the opening up of the position. After that, both side entered into a mad time scramble. With just 30 seconds left on my clock, I was blitzing my moves. I trained myself a lot in blitz and thus very comfortable even though I was running short of time. With that, my opponent put down his weapons...
By the end of 4 rounds, I was the sole leader. Even if I lost the last game, I would still win based on solkoffs. In other words, I had already won the championship with a game to spare. My last round opponent was none other than our current president and GACC player, WS. Before the start of the game, I asked him if he wants to play for a win or a draw. If he wants to win this game, I would respect his decision and I would put in my best effort. He could not make up his mind. He suggested that we would take draw after around 20 moves. We then made our moves. As usual, WS adopted his Saemich variation against my King's Indian Defence. After around move 20, I offered him a draw. I told him that this was the critical position. Beyond this, there would be no turning back because that position is extremely sharp and I would definitely play for a win if he declined my offer. Whenever I enter this position, I can feel myself in an aggressive mode. I was lusting for my opponent's blood. WS accepted my offer after a long contemplation. With that, I won my first IFG chess championship with 4.5/5, thus extending my unbeaten run to 12 games. Not only that, I also won my team medal. Our faculty came in 2nd and lost to Engineering faculty by a mere 0.5 points. Haiz... Otherwise I would have won both individual champion trophy and team medal.
After the end of the tournament, WS told me that he wanted to hand over his post to me in the next semester. I told him I am not ready to take over as club president. I would probably take over next year, but definitely not next semester. Because I feel that I still can contribute a lot to the club as a player. Once I take over as the president, my play would definitely deteriorate. Before such thing happens, I want to win more trophies and medals. I want to win the NUS-NTU team event held on 4 March, National Interclub championship and GACC. NUS was the 1st division champion in 2004. Unfortunately, we were not able to defend the title last year. Haha. Maybe it is because of me. I am a jinx to any team that has me. Out of 100 over trophies and medals, only less than 10% came from team events... Haiz... And I want to win this prestigious Interclub tournament very much! Lastly, I want to come in top 10 in this year's World Varsity Chess Championship. Last year, I came in joint 21th out of 120 players with 5 draws, 3 wins and only 1 loss. That was a great morale booster. Considering that is a world class event and I only lost once suggests to me that I might be a strong chess player after all... I know I can do it. I just need to refine my technique. Counting down... 10 more months to World Cup? Oops I did it again. Hahaaha.. ;=)

A new direction ....

I have not updated my blog for a few weeks already.. This is because I was very busy with my work recently.
2 weeks ago, I saw P... At that time, I had just finished my chemistry lab session and was on my way to the library. Then I saw her. She was sitting on a study bench alone with her laptop in front of her. We exchanged glances, but she didn't seem to recognise me. Actually, at that time I wasn't certain it was her. Because whenever I see her, she is always with her other female friend. That was the first time that I actually saw her alone by herself. I made my way forward towards..... the water-cooler to have a closer look. The water-cooler is situated beside her study bench. Meanwhile, if she isn't P, I can put up an act as though I was there to get a drink. Upon closer look, it was definitely P. No doubt about that. I called her name. She looked up and gave a smile. We then exchanged conversation. She told me that she was waiting for her 3 friends- MT, H and PY to finish their englsh lessons. Once again, I must say that P is really, really very cute and chubby.. Haha. Feel like squeezing her cheeks... Haha.
U know something? I met MT every often. I think God is perhaps playing a trick on me. Otherwise how is it possible that I see her almost everywhere and everytime and under the most unbelievable circumstances? Despite this, I never spoke to her. I just nodded and signaled to her that I recognized her presence. I think she also noticed my aloofness. Initially, she would try to pick up a conversation with me. But now, she doesn't. Well, this is fine with me. I don't feel like talking to anyone either. Right now, work is the most important thing to me. As I mentioned in my previous posts, I do not want to get distracted at this critical moment. During lecture break, more often than not, I would go up to the lecturer and ask questions whenever I have doubts. Also, I am always seated at the front ALONE. In the past I am very afraid of sitting in the front row all by myself. I guess I was very self-conscious then. Now, I am different. I go to school with an unkempt hair and I don't really care how others look at me. I have changed. For better or for worse, I don't know. But there are some things that I like about my new attitude. I am no longer as self conscious as I was before. I feel more confident now. I am not afraid of asking questions even if I run a risk of making a fool of myself. I feel that if I don't know anything, I must ask questions. Einstein once made this statement, ' No question is stupid'. Whenever I feel that I had just made a fool of myself, I always take comfort in Einstein's words. That is the main reason why I had Einstein's photo as my display picture... Hahaha.
I also realised one thing. MT seems to have a suitor. As mentioned earlier, my encounter with MT seems very frequently nowadays. Recently, I saw her with another guy. What does this mean? Is God trying to send me a message? Is God trying to tell me that MT will be lost for good if I don't do anything now? If that is the case, so be it. I don't like MT anymore. To me, she is just another ordinary friend. And I am sure that she knows this by mine, I think... Seems like I gave up a lot of things this semester, you may say. On the contrary, I feel much more relaxed now. I don't feel any burden now. I feel so happy. I don't know why. I lost touch with this feeling for a very long time and now it is back. Perhaps I got back my innocence. Lol. Hahaa... Yesterday, I conducted a chess lecture. I explained some chess principles to them and the whole thing lasted over 3 hrs and I enjoyed myself a lot yesterday, and I received many positive feedback from my 'students'. As you can see, currently, school work and chess take top priority. And I enjoyed myself a lot... Haha... In a way, I think I have found a new direction... A direction that will perhaps change my life... Who knows... :=)

Looking forward...

Yesterday night, I chatted with my female teammate till 4am.(or morning, whatever you choose to call it) MH is a very good friend of mine. We got to know each other better after our experience at the GACC. Now I feel very comfortable with her and this is a mutual feeling too. Now we can chat about almost anything under the sun. So far, only a few close friends of mine know about my blog. And yesterday, I have included MH into this short list. As you know, my blog contains some very sensitive issues. Therefore, people like MT and P and perhaps SC should never know my blog's existence...After MH read my blog, she posed a lot of quetions to me. Consequently, we actually discussed the topic on relationship. MH is right. I should focus on my studies and other important tasks at hand and let nature take its course when it comes to relationship... As stated in the previous posts, I am determined to succeed and nothing will stop me in my quest.
I am looking forward to the NUS vs NTU chess challenge held on 4 FEB 2006. I have prepared myself quite well and I feel very sharp in the tactical aspect. Yesterday, while our former captain DW was giving a chess presentation, I suggested a line which actually has plenty of practical chances. Strangely, this line was not suggested in the analysis report. The whole team took almost 1 hr to come to a conclusion that the line was flawed. However, the solution was not obvious at all. And the team had to get the chess program-Fritz 8 to help analyse the position. Whenever, the team came up with a possible solution, I refuted them. In the end it was Fritz that came to their rescue. Haha... I guess that's me at my best... I am a tactical player who is very adept at calculating variations and I play the man as much as the board. Alas I succumbed to the cold and hard analysis of a chess program. Haha... I swear I will burn my opponents on 4Feb and make sure they regret facing me. After yesterday's chess session, the entire team proceeded to PGP to watch the tournament held by the Vietnamese community. In addition, our chess president, WS, was the guest of honour of that day. That was not all. IM Tu, the national coach, came to PGP as well to lend his support since he is a Vietnamese as well. He played a couple of games with the 1st team- GX, WS, DW, TY and myself. I played 2 against him. In the first game, the position was unclear. But I should say IM Tu had the advantage, but I have my trump card as well on the kingside. However, I lost on time. The second game was a poor display by me. I was too eager to attack, consequently I dropped 2 pawns without any compensation. Nevertheless, it was a good experience for me. I have to improve my skills further and I am determined to have a clean sweep on 4 Feb.
Next week will be a hectic week... All the tutorials and lab sessions will commence next week. This means more homework coming and less time to enjoy myself and perhaps less time to study those difficult subjects... Must plan my time properly. I must do well this semester. Last semester's debacle was a wake-up call for me. If I don't work hard and work smart, I will be in serious trouble.
To my friends. Now is not the right time for relationship. It is not worth ruining your future with BGR. Concentrate on your studies and do well in them. Let people of opposite sex do the courting instead. Haha...What is yours will be yours. No point rushing. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Haha. :-)

Is God testing me?

Today, I only had 1 chemistry lecture from 0800-1000. However, we were released very early at 0900 because the content for today's lecture is very short. As usual, I would go for my meal after morning lecture. Then I remembered that I need to purchase lab goggles for my new major-chemistry. With that, I made my way to CO-OP. Then I saw her... The dreaded and the legendary P... The last person on earth that I thought I would ever see is definitely P.
Last Monday was the start of the new semester. Immediately right after the chem lecture, I saw her. Again. In both instances, we saw each other but I made no effort to greet her. Perhaps God was putting me to a test... In this semester, I made a new resolution- do not 'flirt' with any girls. To me, the word 'flirt' is not the right word. I think a better phrase would be' friendly with the girls'. Of course, if I were to be 'friendly' with them, they would most probably reciprocated. Luckily, there was no lecture on that day.(My good buddies should know why I used the word 'luckily') Despite this, the majority actually turned up for the lecture because we were not informed of this sudden change. Alas... The first Bio lecture will commence next Wednesday and hopefully the 'history will not repeat itself again'. No more distractions. Focus, man. After that, both of us made our way back together as we had only 1 lecture for that particular day. Meanwhile, I revealed to her that I had been sleeping late recently. Why? Because I had been chatting with my Malaysian friend on msn. Then she tried to tease me by asking in a jovial manner, "Who is that person?". I gave a curt reply, "Just a friend."(Don't know why. She kept on inquiring who that person is.) A moment ago, she was walking beside me. All of sudden, she just dropped back. I didn't notice this until we were down to the last stretch. I turned back and I noticed she was walking very slowly at the back. I waved her to hurry. What she was thinking then is up to anybody's guess. And I do not wish to make any comment on it. Then she told me that she would be going to the central library to buy ink cartridges and asked me if I wanted to join her. I shook my head. With that we parted.
Seems like God is testing me. On different subjects as well. Haha. But nothing is going to stop me from achieving my goals. However this is only the second week. I have not updated my blog for almost a month. A lot of things happened last month and all of them involved emotions.
I took part in the world varsity chess tournament last month-GACC. The team did pretty well by coming in joint fifth. Only a mere 1.5 points separated the top 5 teams, excluding the champion team. The Russians completely dominated the tournament and the rest of us could only content for 2nd place. For individual category, I came in tied 21th out of 120 players. There were players from Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Indonesia, China, Vietnam etc. I did quite well in this tournament by scoring 5.5/9 with 5 draws, 3 wins and only 1 loss. The loss was in the 2nd round. In other words, I had a 7 games unbeaten run, from rd 3 till rd 9. It wasn't all serious chess for us. The organising committee had also prepared some fun activities for the players and I enjoyed myself tremendously. During my stay in KL, I managed to make several good friends. One of them is our liaison-SC. She was very fun-loving and helpful. And she still is. And I missed her a lot....
Fortunately, we have MSN. I chatted with her for several weeks. Haha. I spent my last 1 hr of year 2005 talking with her on MSN. That night we chatted until 0330.. Haha. I am glad to meet a good friend like her. But it's ok. We will still be able to see her this year in December. The NUS team will still play in the GACC this year. But some would not be joining us ie; Omar. He will graduate with a phD this April. We will miss his absence greatly. It would not be the same without him. Really hope that he will stay in NUS as a teaching assistant or staff so that he can continue to play for the team. Can't help feeling a bit nostalgic... Uncle Omar. That was the nickname we have for him. Back in KL, he was a great 'story-teller'. But right now he is 'all business' and quite serious too. He is currently a economics tutor in NUS. A very great man.
We can still relive the great moments we had at KL by watching the CD. I have all the pictures and videos transferred to my computer.. Had a really great time there. All this would not have been possible without my teammates and our liaison. Through this experience, we managed to know each other better. I love them all. :=)
Meanwhile, back to reality. School has already started. Must prepare myself for the new semester... No more distraction for me. I did quite badly last sem. Now I must worked really hard. It is time to counter-attack! No more MT, no more P, prob no more SC. (I am sure Felix know about this.) I am now all serious and 'all business'. No more Mr Nice Guy.
I may be beaten. I may be down. But who says I can't fight back! Right now I try to avoid any thing or person that can possibly distract me from my goal. I will, I can, I must succeed!!!

Last Sunday-271105

We went out to Orchard Road to celebrate Fuli's birthday. Actually, it was a belated one. His birthday is actually on 221105. It has been a norm for us to celebrate his birthday late because the date always clashes with our exams schedule. Nevertheless, we still make it a point to celebrate each others' birthday no matter how busy we are. Despite saying this, I am guilty of it because I did not attend Bernard's birthday celebration as I was preoccupied with my studies... Sorry, Bernard. I know it is a lousy excuse. Please don't blame me. It's the education system's fault. Haha. Yeah...
Don't know what to do... Just not used to having so much time available... last Sunday, I received a dreadful msg. NUS's participation in the IVP tournament was rejected. I do not know the reason but I was very disappointed. As mentioned in the previous entry, I thought this competition will be a very good warmup for me in the upcoming World Varsity Championship.. Some how or rather, this did not materialize... I am really very upset over it. Recently, I have been working a lot on my chess. Want to put in my very best effort in this international tournament... It's a once in a life time experience.. It actually gives me a good opportunity to act out my dream- to be a professional player and fight for the World Title.. I am a person who actually enjoys daydreaming.. hard to believe right, my friends? haha... Well, I will need to brace myself and fight for the world championship title! haha. I am daydreaming again.

End Of Exams...

Today marks the end of my examinations for semester 1....I had my Physics paper this morning..Can't believe it. I actually came late for the exams. Although I was late for a mere 5 mins, I had lost my momentum. Anyway, I don't think I did well in any of the papers. I would be extremely happy if I can score CAP 3.5... Now there is nothing I can do except hope for the best...
Didn't know what to do today.. Just not used to having so much time... In the end, I decided to go to the Woodlands Library instead. Ever since I entered university, I haven't had the time to read for mere pleasure. I like reading a lot. Well, my 'long-term' desire was finally satisfied today... haha.
I will be playing in the upcoming IVP chess tournament from281105-301105, held in Singapore Polytechnic. This will be a very good warm-up for me before I leave for KL for the World Varsity Chess Championship.... This will be a very good life experience for me. Not only will I be able to pit my skills against the very best in the world, I may also gain valuable experience through my interaction with people from different parts of the world. It is indeed a once-in-a-life-time experience that I cannot afford to miss... I am really looking forward to it!
Chess has always been a passion for me. I like chess and this is a fact that cannot be altered.
